VISTA SEASON FINALLY KICKING OFF
There's something about anticipation that becomes impossible to shake.
It just builds, getting better and worse at the same time, the closer
we get to an important or potentially exciting event. It becomes
all-consuming, something that's in the back of our minds all the time
and in the front of our minds most of the time. Kids can't wait for
Christmas. Movie buffs can't wait for the latest film starring their
favorite actors. Book hounds can't wait to pick up the most recent
tomes from their favorite authors.

And I can't wait for football season. All summer, it just sort of
brews -- thoughts about my teams' upcoming games, memories of great
and not-so-great moments past, Google (or maybe even MSN) searches to
see what former players are up to. Then, when the cool winds of
September -- hey, I'm based in New England -- begin to blow, it
arrives. Finally. The college season kicks off, and then the NFL
retakes its place as America's premiere sports spectacle. Victory is
never guaranteed (especially as far as my Dallas Cowboys are concerned
in recent years), but, at least, all seems right with the world when
heavily padded men are tossing an oval ball around the gridiron.

And so it is with Windows Vista. After all the delays, all the beta
reviews, all the discussion, all the criticism and all the jokes, it's
really coming. Not today, not by the time football season kicks off,
but soon, and maybe even by Microsoft's latest targeted release date.

As is always the case with Redmond, nothing is guaranteed -- not dates,
not initial quality. And partners know that most wise IT shops will
wisely let Vista mature a bit before buying into it. But, last week's
limited release of a pre-Release Candidate 1 of Vista

http://tinyurl.com/rs4zu , which is good news given some of the rough
treatment reviewers http://tinyurl.com/qa2hk gave Beta 2 a few
months back.

There are signs, too, that the dates for Vista's release are starting
to come together. For one thing, you can pre-order
http://tinyurl.com/o54km some editions of Vista -- slated for a Jan. 30
release date -- now. (Thanks to Derek for the link.) Also, thanks to
our friends http://tinyurl.com/rog7y in the Great White North, we have
an idea of how much Vista is going to cost http://tinyurl.com/ere6e
(hint: a lot). (We even have our friends, those shy, timid Mac folks

that Apple's OS generates more profit per user than Windows

All of this, while ripe for commentary on many fronts, is encouraging.
These are the first snaps of training camp, the first cool breezes of
September blowing away Adobe legal gripes, European Union fines,
investor grousing and the long, hot days of summer in Redmond. Prices,
release candidates, Amazon.com listings ... Vista is real, and it might
actually be available more or less when Microsoft last said it would
be. On top of that, it might also actually be pretty darn good right
out of the box. It remains to be seen whether Vista will be a Super
Bowl contender or an also-ran upon its debut, but at least the season
finally appears close to getting under way.

Microsoft partners most. Hopefully Google's ballyhooed "office suite"
will spark a wave of innovation in the Pacific Northwest that will lead
to both a more useful Office Live and perhaps a cheaper, lighter version
of Office that will be more palatable for small businesses that don't
need everything the bloated suite currently offers. Competition is
healthy, and if Google and Microsoft can push each other to new heights
of innovation, all the better for partners, users and both companies in
the long run.

Microsoft, so often criticized for forcing users to upgrade by failing
to support legacy applications, is broadening its legacy support-- for

the list of governments looking to give Microsoft a hard time in Asia.

Speaking of which, I got a very good e-mail from David (from Australia,
I believe) last week. He says:

"I want to unsubscribe because I thought I was subscribing to a
pro-Microsoft magazine, when in fact it's just another one of the many
anti-Microsoft brigade.

"The sarcastic tone of the DOJ, EU & Asia article is an example.
Partners like us would like to see Microsoft flourish, because our
business interests and success is linked to Microsoft's. So we are upset
to see the EU and now Asia have a go at Microsoft. My slant is that
these attacks are usually opportunistic attempts to extort money from
Microsoft and/or a politically motivated attempt to redefine the world
into some misguided anti-capitalistic utopia (where open source rules).
The effect of the EU and now Asian attacks is certainly not positive
for doing business in those regions.

"I've found each edition of your newsletter panders more and more to
the vocal minority of mindless anti-Microsoft people. I suppose the
serious business partners, like myself usually don't have the time or
inclination to provide you with feedback -- but you should realize that
that is the situation and discount the more outrageous feedback. But I
get the impression that you sympathise with any anti-Microsoft comments,
and that you've therefore decided that they are representative of the
attitude of Microsoft partners -- when the opposite is in fact the case."

This gives me an excellent opportunity to clear up a few issues. This
newsletter (which, while associated with RCP, is pretty much entirely
my own work now and has a decidedly different tone from those of the
magazine and Web site) strives to be neither pro- nor anti-Microsoft.
I pride myself on having been called both in equal measure over the
last few months.

I do my best to criticize and praise Redmond when appropriate and to
call for what's best for partners, users, Microsoft and the industry
as a whole. More than anything, I try to make people think -- to
encourage partners and anyone else reading to explore different
perspectives on the news that affects them and the industry. Agreeing
or disagreeing is immaterial -- it's the critical thinking that counts.
And, if a little sarcasm or a quip here or there makes all of this go
down more easily, all the better.

Beyond that, I've said in past versions of the newsletter that the EU
should leave Microsoft well enough alone and that I'm not a fan of
government regulation

changed. I wrote about the situations in South Korea and China not
because I liked what the governments or legal systems there were
trying to do but because they made for interesting test labs for
Microsoft's future in two huge markets.

Hopefully that's all clear now. And, on that note, I'm off to prepare
for my fantasy football draft tonight.

FIRST THE DOJ, THEN THE EU... AND NOW, ASIA
It's tough being a monopoly, or a runaway market leader, or whatever
Microsoft is with its Windows juggernaut. Oh, sure, the profits are
nice, and crushing competitors almost at will is definitely a perk.
But when you're on top, everybody's always out to get you -- babbling
on about unfair business practices and predatory pricing and the like.
Really, it must get old.

And so, after winning its battle with the U.S. Department of Justice
(which still resonates to this day) and while still in the midst of
fighting the pesky European Union, Microsoft has a challenge on yet
another front: Asia.

Two challenges, actually. One comes from South Korea, where Microsoft
today released two new versions of Windows, one that doesn't bundle
Windows Media Player and Windows Messenger, and another that includes
links to downloads of competitors' media and messaging software. The
second of the two is the more interesting. It should provide a little
insight as to whether users will take the time to investigate
competitors' wares if given easy access to them or will choose, more
or less of their own free will, to go with Microsoft's home-baked stuff.

The other challenge is potentially much more dangerous for Microsoft.
The Chinese government is cooking up an anti-monopoly law that could
lead to heavy fines for companies that control more than 50 percent of
a given market and are judged -- by the government, of course -- to set
unfair prices http://tinyurl.com/hohvz . Given that Windows has more
than 50 percent market share in China, Microsoft could be right in the
government's sights. And, frankly, trusting the Chinese central
government to evaluate Microsoft's pricing practices fairly and without
ulterior motives seems, well, a bit na�ve.

We're no fans of government regulation, but these two cases should be
worth following. The South Korean scenario could tell us what users,
at least in one part of the world, really think of Microsoft technology
that doesn't just get pushed to them in Windows. Are Media Player and
Messenger really worth a download, especially if competitive products
are so readily and easily available? We'll find out.

The Chinese case, on the other hand, could lead to real trouble for
Redmond in a place where Microsoft and everybody else wants to score
big profits in the years to come. While the concept seems relatively
sound -- and is, indeed, based on U.S. and EU policies -- the potential
for a little strong-arming by the very invasive Chinese government
makes for a potentially serious threat. Monopoly or not, life isn't
getting any easier in Redmond.

MICROSOFT AND CITRIX GANG UP ON CISCO
The long-time partners have expanded their partnership to target branch
offices of big companies -- which, incidentally, is also a big target
of Microsoft's Dynamics ERP suites.

Gartner has some advice as to how IT people should react. Notice, too,
how the Gartner guys congratulate themselves for predicting a Microsoft-
Cisco battle back in 1997. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure I'd be
so excited about a prediction I made taking 10 years to come true

newsletter entry 10 years from now, I'll come out and say that Google
will own at least 50 percent of the OS market by 2016. Take that with
a grain of salt -- or maybe a shaker. I'll be back to brag about it if

IE7 RC1 FOR DOWNLOAD ASAP
Well, maybe not ASAP, but the almost-finished version of IE7 is out
there. And in other browser news, apparently Mozilla is going to take
Microsoft up on its offer for help in developing Firefox for Vista,
thereby placing itself in the teeth of the beast.

Matt, though, our serial e-mailer, isn't too worried that working with
Microsoft will pose a threat to Firefox:

"I'm not sure what MS would gain as far as stealing secrets from
Firefox developers, considering that it is an OSS project and therefore
MS can download and view all the code anytime it wants. The most they
might glean is hints as to future directions, etc., but that is pretty
much open as well. It probably is mostly a PR ploy. It's like offering
to do something for your wife that you know she will do herself anyway.
You get all the credit with none of the work! The next time MS gets
bashed for its proprietary ways, they can point to their offer and say,
'See, we offered to help an OSS project that is the greatest threat to
IE in our history, so we must be good guys, right?'"

Right. The key word in "open source" is indeed "open."

But Andrew, who writes all the way from Oman, isn't so sure...: "As far
as 'up to no good,' all being fair in love and war, I would not trust
Microsoft if I were Firefox. Altruism from a monopoly? I somehow don't
think so!"

Wise words, I suspect. It pays to be careful when Redmond's involved.

A PATCH FOR A PATCH
What a total mess Microsoft's August patches have turned out to be.
Microsoft had to re-release one of its IE patches today because the
original was crashing the browser. Yikes....

IS MICROSOFT TRYING TO TRAP A (FIRE)FOX?
Here in the molasses-slow days of August, this is what passes for news:
Microsoft has invited developers of Mozilla's Firefox browser to work
with the Redmond giant so that Firefox will work properly with Vista.

Sounds innocent enough, right? Well, it probably is. But that didn't
prevent some open-source fans from postulating that Microsoft is
somehow trying to lure Firefox developers to Redmond in order to
weasel secrets out of them, or recruit them, or... something.

There is this little tidbit from the first story posted that adds a
mild level of intrigue to the discussion: "Firefox already runs
successfully on existing Windows, Linux and Macintosh operating systems.
Testing by silicon.com sister site ZDNet UK found it also runs well in
Vista beta 2, so it's not clear why Mozilla would need help
from Microsoft."

Have these people ever actually used Firefox in Windows? I have, and
while I've found it to be a fine browser, I have had some problems with
it in the Windows environment. Maybe I'm alone there, but I don't think
so. So, in that sense, there probably is some work to be done in making
non-IE browsers like Firefox more compatible with Windows. And, in a
broader sense, this serves as a veiled admission on Redmond's part to
the well-known fact that third-party software doesn't always work as
well in Windows as Microsoft's own home-cooked apps do.

But, why does Microsoft care about making an IE competitor more
compatible with the world's dominant OS? Is this just an elaborate ruse
to steal secrets (and devs) from Mozilla? Is it a case of Microsoft
relenting that proprietary technologies are giving way to open-source
alternatives (as one Ars Technica poster suggested, citing "the embrace
of RSS, the Open Source lab, XML and royalty-free access to OpenXML")?
Is this, ultimately, the beginning of the end for IE?

Any of those factors could be behind this move, but it's likely that
none of them is. In fact, this looks more than anything else like a
feel-good public relations move aimed at making Microsoft look a little
less rigid and proprietary and a little more willing to work with
open-source technologies and developers. And, if whatever collaboration
does happen leads to improvements in IE, Firefox and browsers in
general, that's all the better for users.

Still, the Firefox folks would be wise -- as would partners working
with Microsoft on development -- not to reveal too much about their
applications or their strategies. Guarded collaboration, at most,
should be the order of the day. There's no need for Mozilla to help set
a trap for Firefox in Redmond, especially if Microsoft doesn't seem to
be in the hunting mood.

REDMOND RIVALS LINK UP
Two of the bigger pains in Redmond's backside, Salesforce.com (of hosted
CRM fame) and Google, got a little bit closer this week. Salesforce.com
bought a tiny start-up whose technology will be the basis for Salesforce
for Google Adwords, which will let companies manage Google ad campaigns
from within Salesforce applications.

SO WHO SAID CRIME PAYS?
Great story out of Romania, of all places, this week about police
busting up an Internet phishing ring. The funniest part is that these
guys probably weren't even making enough money to upgrade to Office 2007.
Check out the numbers: "A total of 62 suspects -- 23 of whom were
arrested -- are accused of defrauding 120 foreigners of more than
$128,000."

Seriously, give it up, guys. You'd be better off scooping fries at the
Bucharest Burger King.

DAVID BRENT EXPOSED AS MICROSOFT SELLOUT
So, apparently, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the guys who
created the very funny BBC comedy The Office

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386676/ , did some sort of faux training
video for Microsoft in 2003. Apparently David Brent hasn't spent his
whole career at Werhnam Hogg. Or maybe this was his project after
being made redundant.

1) REDMOND CHANNEL PARTNER UPDATE

SURPRISE! WINDOWS LIVE SERVICES MAY BE COMING TO VISTA
One note before we get started: Today's newsletter will be a bit
shorter than usual. First off, there's just not a lot of news in the
middle of August. More importantly, though, I might not have much
time before my company-issued Dell laptop bursts into flames. The
keyboard's getting hot to the touch, so I'll keep things
relatively brief.

Today's non-news news is that Microsoft might include links to
Windows Live services in the Vista welcome screen.

Whoa! Really? Microsoft is going to leverage the operating system to
push services such as search, anti-virus and messaging in which it's
way behind its competitors? Surely this kind of thing is revolutionary.
Somebody call the Department of Justice! This could change everything....

Sarcasm aside, while this little tidbit of news is no surprise,
Microsoft's OS-centric strategy might not be as effective this time as
it has been in the past. Sure, Internet Explorer crushed Netscape in a
similar scenario a few years back, but Google, for instance, is far
more established in users' minds -- and on the Internet, outside the
context of Windows -- than Netscape ever was. And as far as
anti-virus software goes, Windows Live OneCare is still a product for
separate purchase that won't be bundled into the OS. That means that a
lot of users will still take the time to compare it to similar
offerings from Symantec and McAfee (two other established,
recognizable names), among others, before making a decision to buy.

Plus, Microsoft should make good and sure that it's happy with the
name Windows Live before it carves it in marketing stone in Vista.
The concept hasn't caught on terribly well so far, and the Live
moniker will be awfully tough to dump if it finds a permanent place in
the operating system. There would be, then, a certain amount of
branding risk involved in this strategy, should Microsoft choose to
pursue it.

Will pushing Windows Live in Vista help boost Microsoft's market share
in critical spaces such as search and anti-virus? Probably, but it's
certainly not the death knell to competitors that Redmond probably
hopes it will be.

Roman writes: "I have been anti-advocate of Symantec products for many
years. Their products are always a source of a problem (with little
exclusion, like Ghost). Being in the computer field for more than 15
years, I've seen hundreds of problems contributed by Symantec products.
This is my experience, and I won't be surprised to read about similar
experiences from other folks."

Don't be surprised, Roman, because here comes a similar comment from
Mike: "If McAfee and Symantec could put out a product that was as good
as Microsoft's Live OneCare, then they wouldn't need to be so worried."

Short, to the point, and not ambiguous. Thanks to both of you

GOOGLE'S GONE GOOFY
OK, so I'm not the only one who found this week's little proclamation
from Google banning the use of the word "Google" as a verb completely
ridiculous.

apparently lost. 'Genericide?' It is the ultimate compliment to become
a verb. They ought to be worried about new and innovative ways to

search engine of choice today that it will stay that way. I seem to
recall at one time Netscape was the de facto standard Web browser. I
reach for a Kleenex, even though it's a Scot tissue. I put on a Band-

"It kind of reminds me of a story I heard back in the '80s or early

not to use his name in that way. They changed the name of the project

lesson to be learned there (and it's still funny)."

By the way, just as a final thought -- calling Duncan's Yo-Yo a

now did it? As far as I know, people do still jump up and down on all
sorts of Trampolines and other 'trampolines' and use Kleenex. (Facial
tissues? Basically what we here in the USA generally refer to simply
as 'Kleenex,' which we use to blow our noses.) You know some of us
even still have reports 'Xeroxed,' and please don't even get me started
on 'nylon' or the term 'genericide'. Just a thought, but is
'genericide' even a real word? Do you think I can use it if I get the
opportunity to do so the next time my friends and I get together for
a relaxed game of Scrabble? I scrabble, you scrabble, she scrabbles...
oh never mind."

2.5, if I were Scrabble poobah, I would fully allow the use of the
word "genericide." But you'd better watch how you use the word
"scrabble...."
